While there certainly is a lot of misinformed 4x4 bashing, and don't get me wrong - it's certainly good to see people trying to correct such. But defending 4x4s with claims like "4x4's are safer on the road then other road cars" are equally as stupid. And the apostrophe is wrongly used. :)

Yes sure, most 4x4 are safer on the road - for its occupants. But they are considerably more dangerous for other road users.

Although I'll defend the bull-bar on my Niva as necessary off-road, seeing amount of damage they can do to a car (and it's occupants) in an accident I can not justify their use on 4x4s that seldom see off-road use.
Actually, I see little justification for any 4x4s that are used solely for the daily grind and don't get used off-road (unless you're a doctor etc and actually need to have a capable vehicle on hand at all times).

I would largely disagree with that statement.

Most 4x4 vehicles may be as safe on the road as any other car/truck/ute if driven correctly and with respect for the on road capabilities of the vehicle and conditions.

The trouble is most aren't driven correctly. Mrs School Run has no idea that her braking distances are increased, her vehicle has a higher centre of gravity, it will have a tendency to understeer and in an accident is likely to end up on it's roof and crumple just as any other car would.

Tsh tsh, you've only quoted half my statement - thus quoting it out of somewhat context (my point being that SUVS are only safer for those inside; ie occupants in a SUV will be better off 9 times out of 10 in a collision with a normal car. I'm pretty sure research backs me up on this).

But indeed I agree that SUVs driven by ignorant drivers are a serious problem (even for their occupants) - I just didn't want to open the "if driven correctly" tin of worms into this thread.

I'm sure you'll agree with my main point that claiming 4x4s are safer on the road is not only foolish, but is a stupid and transparent defence of 4x4s...

PS - and as above I struggle to find any justification for Mrs School Run's use of a 4x4 on both saftey and ecological grounds. Indeed I somewhat agree with the more sensible of the finger-pointers who criticise the unnecessary use of 4x4s for the school runs etc.
